Smart windows use an electrically responsive layer within the glazing to change how the glass interacts with light. The exact switching behavior depends on the smart glass technology used.
PDLC smart glass contains liquid crystal droplets dispersed within a polymer layer. When electrical power is applied, the liquid crystals align, allowing light to pass through and making the glass appear transparent. When the power is switched off, the crystals return to a random orientation, scattering light and creating a frosted appearance.
This clear-to-frosted switching makes PDLC particularly useful for applications where on-demand privacy is the main requirement.

SPD stands for Suspended Particle Device. Inside the glazing is a thin film containing microscopic suspended particles that respond to electrical voltage.
When little or no voltage is applied, the particles remain randomly oriented and absorb more incoming light, making the glass darker. As voltage is applied, the particles align and allow more light to pass through. By varying the voltage, the tint can be continuously adjusted between lighter and darker states.
This continuous tint control allows SPD smart windows to respond to changing daylight, glare, and solar heat while maintaining outward views.

Electrochromic smart glass changes its tint through a reversible electrochemical process within a multi-layer coating. When a small electrical voltage is applied, ions and electrons move between the electrochromic layers, changing how the glass absorbs and transmits light. Reversing the voltage moves the ions back, returning the glazing toward its clearer state.
